The islands of northern Georgian Bay are spectacular.  Accessible only by boat, of course- a kayak is the preferred mode of transportation to get here- and you are in this exotic world of rocks, pine trees,, open space and crystal clear water, although the environment is harsh.   A wind can strand you here for days- that possibility and the remoteness makes the experience a more precious one.  As I was leaving on my previous visit, I enjoyed my last moments looking out onto this west facing shore, and saw the possibility of this photograph, although the time wasn’t right and […]

In keeping with my quest to explore and photograph the Bruce Peninsula, I stayed a few nights at Stormhaven in 2017.  It is a back country campsite on the Bruce Trail, very close to Cyprus Lake and The Grotto, hence it’s a bit easier to get to and less remote in its feel.  But the people you meet are always great to talk to, and they’re not just spending their life shopping.  The springtime has the sun as far north as it gets, giving the cliffs and rocks the best lighting- before too long the cliffs are always in shadow.  […]

I managed to get to the Bruce Peninsula more in 2016 than in past years, and I never get tired of the space, the clear water, and its exotic and unique qualities. Within a few hours are 4 million people, and I’m glad not too many of them are there.  Later in the year the sun never ventures too far north, so it’s always behind the cliffs, casting interesting shadows onto the water.  This mid-October trip with friends was enjoyed with almost late-summer type weather.  The major drawback was that we got out too late to get the fish and chips in […]

Most years, at some point between May and November, I like to spend a quiet night at this back country campsite on the Bruce Trail. It is reachable by kayak, and that makes it even more special.  And these past few years, I have come to appreciate the qualities of the Bruce Peninsula more, and I have made it a point to photograph a few destinations, experimenting with a few more tricks and techniques.   The water level has come back up from past years and this creates a “cleaner” shoreline for a more dramatic foreground.  And during the summer months the setting sun […]

This is my NFP- new favourite picture.  At least for now.  I got away for a few days to the Bruce Peninsula, to be quiet and of course, take some photos.  It is a magical place, just a few hours away from home, yet exotic and very different from the landscape of southern Ontario.  But it has been difficult to come up with photographs that go beyond the surface of the place- however beautiful it is- and express what the area feels like to me. But this time it all fell into place.  In walking the shore, I saw in […]

Riding the Bus

I was meeting people in downtown Guelph for dinner and drinks and took the bus.  It was empty and the colour combination of the interior lighting, blue seats and bright yellow bars was interesting, and I happened to sit in a spot where the symmetry of the scene struck me.  I do have a thing for symmetry and structure (I blame it on my German background) although I try to keep it under control.   Life would be too tough if that ran the show.  So I took a picture with my phone.  Just because I can.

I love winter.  And when time allows, I try to get out west, do some photography in the mountains, and strap a snowboard to my feet.  When those things happen on the same day, it is bound to be a great day.  This year a friend and I went to Fernie, then to Kicking Horse in Golden, BC, where the sun came out and a magnificent day was had.   It is a completely different environment, where all our usual thoughts are overshadowed by the scale of things.  It always humbles, yet uplifts.  Any experience that does both, is bound […]

First of all, I have to come clean and admit I didn’t take this picture on Christmas or boxing day of this or any other year. But I did go in-line skating on boxing day of this year.  It was about 5 degrees, cloudy, with a bit of an unpleasant easterly wind, but it was great anyway. As I have mentioned elsewhere on my website (where I have this photo in the “fun stuff” section), this is one of the best therapies I can choose to do most of the year, whenever I feel like it. It’s smooth (if the […]

This past summer I had the pleasure of going to Newfoundland for work.  I shot a number of Google Streetview tours of Battlefield Equipment Rental stores on the Rock, and Goose Bay, Labrador.  But Newfoundland is an awesome place, so I made it into a personal creative photography trip as well.   And for years I had wanted to experiment with time exposures, especially with water, and other related effects.   So I bought an awesome filter system that allows me all sorts of possibilities.  If it’s one thing I don’t mind spending money on, it’s photo gear.  And this […]
