This farming couple was featured on the cover of  “Better Pork” in the summer of 2018.  It’s always a pleasure to work with people who rely on the land for their livelihood.  Their approach to living seems to be more firmly “planted”.

The little ones were…. well, little ones- quite the handful- but the evening was beautiful, and we all just had to come up with a bit of patience.   This farming couple was featured on the cover of “Better Pork” Magazine,  but I was happy to do a family shot while I was there.

This photo shoot was for a university magazine cover photo, and it was simply a blast!!  This couple was married for fifty years at the time, and clearly have something good going on. They canoe regularly, are involved in countless other activities and causes, and exude an optimism that is palpable.  Every conversation we had, and every time I have run into them since, is simply fun.

What does your profile photo look like?   Was it taken on a phone or a webcam??   In this age, this is how you make your first impression.  An effective photo represents you well, and make a positive impression 24/7, even when you are asleep.

Do you have a group of people that you would like photographed, where the final image looks neat and organized, and the shooting process is quick, and perhaps even fun for the whole group??  This was a national meeting for a company, of about 275 people.

I was asked to do the formal portrait of Rob Gordon, now the President of The University of Windsor, then the outgoing Dean of OAC, which would hang in Johnston Hall, alongside the other portraits from it’s long history. This was a chance to make a photograph that has more relevance and longevity than most, and would hopefully contribute to the historical narrative of the College. The good thing is that Johnston Hall is an old building and has rich, wood-paneled rooms that lend themselves to many different photographic approaches. And Rob has always been a great person to work with. This U of G promotional photo goes back a number of years.  It was used in their Admission Handbooks and printed materials of all sorts. I still see the poster of this image displayed in many offices around campus- that must be a good sign, I suspect.   Mordechai Rozanski, the President at the time, liked “the glow” the photo had, which came from a home made diffusion filter that gave the photo a very different feel than it would have otherwise had.  Sometimes a very subtle tweak to an image can really notch up the effect it has on people.  And it’s […]

Lilian is an agricultural writer, and one of my favourite clients.  With her, everything is straight-forward, thought-out and organized, well before she gets in touch with me about a project.   She is a pleasure to work with. And what better way to show an ag-writer than to put her in a field??  I found a spot with just the right amount of shade, the right angle to the sun, and the space to do a number of different approaches, this one being my favourite.

This a photo for a marketing campaign by Doosan- the company that makes construction equipment.   Assignments can take you into many different environments and places of work, and some of them can be quite dynamic, definitely interesting, and maybe even dangerous.  I’ve climbed over all sorts of obstacles, stepped in…  well, never mind (many times), and sat on the roof of agricultural combines while they were harvesting corn.  And I would do it all again.
