Portrait of a Producer for a Seed Company Catalouge.
Hard working. Straightforward. Honest. No BS. That’s what farming is all about.

A location portrait done in her office.
A very sharp, involved and high-achieving student.
A vibrant, enthusiastic group of students at U of Waterloo doing research projects Whenever I have the chance to photograph them, I am impressed with them on many levels, and want to jump right in and join them in whatever they are doing.

We used a few locations for this extended family. The only drawback to the photo on the left is that it shows the unfinished state of the boathouse- note the very top left corner. But otherwise a beautiful spot where the family spends a lot of their time in the summer.
Marena is one of those young people that seem to be way ahead of the curve when it comes to their understanding of the world, of people, and of themselves. And that seems to make a photo shoot more creative, intuitive, and a positive experience all around.
Every once in a while- nowhere near often enough- I do a photo shoot, and I seem to return to the office with some beer, and I’m not quite sure how it happened. I’m sure his Mom is proud, and it’s easy to celebrate people’s success when they handle it well.
Ansel was my first cat, named after the great landscape photographer Ansel Adams. If you have’t heard of him, Google him. Ansel the cat, would sit on the tank and watch me brush my teeth or shave, and after many days, months, perhaps longer, I realized there was a photo waiting to be taken- black cat, white surroundings- always a good starting point for an interesting photo. Of course he wasn’t too cooperative, and I managed to steal only this one frame before he jumped down. But I was prepared and got what I wanted.
Who would have thought that those two things can go together.
When you hear about money going into research, this is where it goes. This particular group studies animal health and how it will help us understand human health, and all sorts of other things I can never recall for very long. And it’s my job to represent the research in a photograph. That sounds easy on paper, but photos done in labs can be challenging. They can all look alike after a while, but there is always a new approach waiting for me- something that adds pizzaz to mundane-looking work, and helps communicate what happens in this very unique […]
