It does not happen very often where you have a chance to photograph the same family twice in 16 years.   The kids have kids of their own, hair has gotten a bit greyer for some. Where would we be without our family? I love those beautiful fall days when I get to be a part of a family celebration- this one being for the grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary. And both are in great health- fit, active, and very much up-to-no-good!

A striking portrait can be done almost anywhere (sort-of).  But you have an infinite set of choices that have to be made, from when to shoot, where to place your subject,  where you are going to place yourself, what camera settings to use (“good cameras” don’t know what to do, btw). And sometimes, you find yourself lying on your stomach  trying to direct your subject, making sure you are not lying on discarded bubble gum.

High Schools all have their “wall of fame” of portraits of past Principals, and this retiring Principal still had great hair, so clearly he needed a photo that did him justice.  I recall him saying he’d rather be jumping into his canoe, than pose for a formal portrait, so we did something less formal, at the school rather than in studio, as most of the previous portraits had been.  I set up a number of flash units, positioned them carefully to incorporate the school logo that was in the form of a stained-glass piece at the entrance, where he would […]
