A Grolsch Marketing Photo

Industrial facilities are inherently messy, so finding beauty and creating imagery that helps them show their best side is challenging. But you see processes and machinery that are impressive, and I am always pleasantly surprised by the helpfulness from the average employee ready to help me get my shot.
A dispenser to produce a custom mix of farm chemicals for each individual farm, to minimize any environmental effects.
An architectural photo, taken at dusk. Timing is critical for these types of photos. The sky darkens very quickly, then the ambient light allows much of the photo to render completely black, and the mood is easily lost.

This company does some very interesting things. They build climate-controlled facilities of all sizes and types, designed for very specialized purposes. Some of them include very large storage rooms for pharmaceuticals, and “clean rooms” built for sterile testing and research in hospitals. It is great work with capable and nice people working at the top of their field, whatever that may be. Here they asked me to make the facility look large.
This U of G promotional photo goes back a number of years. It was used in their Admission Handbooks and printed materials of all sorts. I still see the poster of this image displayed in many offices around campus- that must be a good sign, I suspect. Mordechai Rozanski, the President at the time, liked “the glow” the photo had, which came from a home made diffusion filter that gave the photo a very different feel than it would have otherwise had. Sometimes a very subtle tweak to an image can really notch up the effect it has on people. And it’s […]
Semex, an agricultural company operating world-wide, moved to a new location, and needed imagery to use in their corporate branding and marketing efforts going forward. Their new sign that stood at the road had been thoughtfully designed and placed in relation to the tree-lined laneway that leads to their building. I saw this as bit of a personal project as well as a job- part architectural, part landscape photography- two genres of photography I gravitate to. A few early morning visits to see what could be done with this eventually led to a foggy late-summer morning where my ideas gelled into a […]
This a photo for a marketing campaign by Doosan- the company that makes construction equipment. Assignments can take you into many different environments and places of work, and some of them can be quite dynamic, definitely interesting, and maybe even dangerous. I’ve climbed over all sorts of obstacles, stepped in… well, never mind (many times), and sat on the roof of agricultural combines while they were harvesting corn. And I would do it all again.
Industrial photo shoots are never boring. One has the opportunity to see what incredible things are happening in those dreary-looking buildings on the outskirts of any city. Often they do incredibly complex processes, almost perfectly, all day, every work day. I never frown on a person who comes from work in dirty overalls- they may be doing things as complex as brain surgery! And they offer me the challenge of taking those things that can appear messy, dirty and disorganized, and turn them into photos that hopefully communicate something about what magic they do all day, every day. Here they […]

Bleachers have evolved. This is a hi-tech installation with sensors, motors and automation that allow them to fold up against a wall and take up virtually no space. Photographing this type of subject matter is challenging- the photos can easily be rather boring. They are just seats, after all. But I do like the challenge. And the colour combination does work some magic. A college photography instructor always liked red and black together in a commercial photo shoot, and when one would incorporate them into a photo assignment it seemed to translate into a slightly better grade. Thank you, […]
