Every once in a while- nowhere near often enough- I do a photo shoot, and I seem to return to the office with some beer, and I’m not quite sure how it happened.  Brent was generous with his time, not just his beer,  and made it a pleasure.  He is always the same guy wherever you see him.  And that is called good character.  I’m sure his Mom is proud, and it’s easy to celebrate people’s success when they handle it well.

Ansel was my first cat, named after the great landscape photographer Ansel Adams.  If you have’t heard of him, Google him.   Ansel the cat, would sit on the tank and watch me brush my teeth or shave, and after many days, months, perhaps longer, I realized there was a photo waiting to be taken- black cat, white surroundings- always a good starting point for an interesting photo.   Of course he wasn’t too cooperative, and I managed to steal only this one frame before he jumped down.  But I was prepared and got what I wanted.

In-line skating is for me one of the best stress-relievers I know of.   Skating is smooth, rhythmic and somehow meditative.   It requires some attention and coordination, but before you know it, it just seems to flow effortlessly.  And whatever you were concerned about before you started, seems to diminish in importance.  Solutions become more clear, problems lose their power, and the world becomes more beautiful again. Throw in a few good friends and may be a visit to a trail-side patio, and it’s nothing short of a small vacation.

I love conversations on ski lifts.  People have things to say, and when they are having a great day on the slopes, they can be remarkably honest and open.  Politics, religion, art, the great snow, anything goes and nothing is taboo most all the time.  And sometimes I see a picture somewhere, and ask if it’s OK to take it.  The answer is always a yes- ski resorts breed optimism.

This was actually the first ‘glowing tent’ photo I did, taken on an island in Georgian Bay, within paddling distance of Killarney- one the most beautiful places on earth, in my opinion.  The mosquitoes on this June evening were unbelievable. The sound of their buzzing around the tent was actually audible all night long. But still one of the most beautiful places on earth, and I’d go back in a heartbeat. Even in June.

Another photo taken on long-gone Kodak infrared film.  A fish-eye lens, and a full roll of infrared film was a guarantee of a good time!!

I had always seen these night shots done with a light source in a tent, and wanted to do my own. So I made it a point to repair my camping lantern (carburetor cleaner did the trick), and this is what I came up with.  More coming….
